Part 2. Here's the number they didn't lead with.

Amit Shah's "south stays at ~24%" math only works if the Lok Sabha
stops at 816 seats. He said 850 himself — calling it "only a rough
estimate." At 850 instead of 816, that same seat count is 23%, not 24.
Nobody's hiding this — but nobody's promised the final number actually
stops at 816 either.

There's a third number too: on a straight population count, the
opposition's estimate has south India dropping from 129 seats to 103.
Three numbers. Three sets of assumptions. Nothing settled.

And the census this is supposed to be based on isn't even finished.
The last time seats were redrawn between states was the 1970s.

The constitutional amendment behind all of it failed in April — 298
for, 230 against, short of the two-thirds majority required. It's
expected back this session.
